Short line operator Patriot Rail Company LLC has merged with Diversified Port Holdings LLC, part of a plan to offer bundled rail/sea services to shippers.

The Jacksonville companies are owned by SteelRiver Infrastructure Partners. DPH is the parent of stevedores Seaonus and Portus. The merger was effective Sept. 1.

The companies now report to Patriot Rail Chief Executive John Fenton. Ten corporate positions at DPH were eliminated in the restructuring.

The merger is “a strategic initiative to combine capabilities to meet a market need," Fenton told the Jacksonville Business Journal.

Patriot Rail operates 12 short line railroads in 14 states. DPH operates 10 terminals in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

Fenton said the merger makes Patriot Rail the only "blue water/rail-services company in North America, and that the sister companies previously offered a bundle of port and rail services.
