GWI traffic declines in October

Greenwich, Conn.-based Genesee & Wyoming, Inc. Tuesday said freight traffic declined 4.8% in October compared with October 2011.

Declining commodity groups included Farm & Food Products, down 31.3%, Metals, down 11.9%, and Coal & Coke, down 9.2%. Gaining ground were Metallic Ores, up 31.8%, Lumber & Forest products, up 21.7%, Petroleum Products, up 17.7%, and Intermodal, up 13.4%.

Excluding 125 carloads from the Hilton & Albany Railroad, Inc. (HAL), which commenced operations on Jan. 1, 2012, and 1,249 carloads from the Columbus & Chattahoochee Railroad, Inc. (CCH), which commenced operations on July 1, 2012, same-railroad traffic in October 2012 decreased 6.5% compared with October 2011, GWI said.
