Union Pacific has been named one of the 2012 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles, the only railroad to receive the award offered annually by the National Business Group on Health (NBGH). UP has received this honor each year since the award's inception in 2005.

Union Pacific Wellness, the railroad's health promotion initiative, encourages employees to lead a healthy life.

As described by UP, "The program assesses and provides intervention support for 11 health risk factors: asthma, blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, fatigue, inactivity, nutrition, smoking, stress and weight. Risk identification and reduction programs consist of wellness assessments and biometric screenings, lifestyle management, tobacco cessation, system health facilities, education programs, research grants and injury prevention."

"Enjoying good health lets our employees spend quality time with families and friends, and makes for a safer work environment," said Barb Schaefer, Union Pacific senior vice president human resources. "It is also important that our employees maintain good health so we can serve our customers to the best of our abilities. Union Pacific is an employer of choice because we help our employees reach their wellness goals and we are honored to be recognized for this by the National Business Group on Health."
