"Our employees' focus on safety, service and efficiency, along with our record levels of capital investment, are creating excellent value for our customers, increasing profitability for Union Pacific and generating greater rewards for our shareholders," said Jim Young, Union Pacific chairman and CEO. "As we celebrate 150 years of Union Pacific, we continuously strive to work safely, develop innovative freight transportation solutions for our customers, and deliver strong returns to our shareholders."
Young noted that it was 150 years ago that Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, creating the original Union Pacific. Today UP links 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country. From 2000 through 2011, Union Pacific spent more than $31 billion on its network and operations.
