Rail employment rises for month and year

Total Class I railroad employment reached 162,443 in October, 1.37% higher than in October 2011 and a gain of 0.74% over September 2012.

The biggest numerical increase was in the number of transportation-train and engine (train crew) employees, which grew to 65,121, an increase of 1.65% over October 2011 and 1.43% higher than in September 2012.

Numbers in the second largest employment group, maintenance of way and structures, grew to 37,205, up 1.57% from last October and up 0.13% from September 2012.

Maintenance of equipment and stores employment increased to 29,708, up fractionally from both last year and from September.

The biggest percentage increase in employment was among executives, officials, and staff assistants. Their numbers increased to 9,819, up 4.97% from October 2011 and up 1.06% from September 2012.

Transportation (other than train & engine) was the only declining employment category, down 0.98% from a year ago, and also down 2.36% from September 2012.
