Written by  Luther S. Miller, Senior Consulting Editor

Norfolk Southern announced Friday that Timothy J. Drake, vice president engineering, will retire Oct. 31 and will be succeeded by Michael J. Wheeler, formerly vice president transportation. Succeeding Wheeler will be Terry N. Evans, formerly vice president process engineering.

Drake, a veteran of 36 years with NS, joined the company as an assistant track supervisor and served in a variety of engineering positions.

"Tim Drake and his team, quite simply, have set the standard for safe, reliable rail infrastructure in this country," said CEO Wick Moorman. "Terry and Mike bring a range of valuable experience to their positions and will help lead the way as our shippers and receivers come to rely even more on the railroad industry as the backbone of the economy."

Wheeler and Evans report to Mark D. Manion, executive vice president operations. Their appointments are effective Nov. 1.
