Executives, officials, and staff assistants gained 1.67%; Transportation (train and engine), rose 1.27%; Maintenance of equipment and stores advanced 0.74%; and Maintenance of way and structures edged up 0.63%.
Five of six categories gained ground in mid-May from mid-April levels. Maintenance-of-Way and Structures again led the monthly gain, up 0.69%, followed by Professional and Administrative, up 0.38%, Maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.25%, Transportation (train and engine), up 0.16%, and Executives, officials, and staff assistants, eking out a 0.03% gain. The sole declining group between April and May: Transportation (other than train and engine), down a modest 0.29%.
