March employment gains over year, previous month

Figures released Monday by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroads employed 163,059 people in mid-March, up 0.66% from March 2012, and up 831 people, or 0.51% from last February.

As per one month ago, all categories save one gained year-over-year, with Transportation (train and engine) again posting the only year-over-year loss, down 0.66%. Leading the winners year-over-year was Professional and administrative, up 2.61%, followed by Executives, officials, and staff assistants, up 2.38%, Maintenance of equipment and stores, up 0.99%, Maintenance of way and structures, up 0.56%, and Transportation (other than train and engine), up 0.34%.

Though overall March employment gained ground from the previous month, just three of six categories led by way. Maintenance-of-Way and Structures again led the monthly gain, up 1.31%, followed by Transportation (train and engine), up 0.68%, and Professional and administrative, up 0.16%. Transportation (other than train and engine) led the decliners, down 0.66%, followed by Executives, officials, and staff assistants, down 0.60%, and Maintenance of equipment and stores, down a modest 0.02%.
