All employment groups gained year over year, with maintenance of way and structures up 3.74% from a year ago and up 2.13% from the previous month. Maintenance of equipment and stores employees also advanced, up 3.2% year-over-year and barely up 0.13% from the previous month.

Train crew employment—transportation (train and engine)—rose a robust 3.58% in April from a year ago and up a more modest 0.79% from March 2012.

Two categories declined, though slightly, in April from the previous month: Executives, officials, and staff assistants, down 0.07%, and Professional and administrative workers, down 0.28%.
