Fortune magazine has awarded Union Pacific the title of "Most Admired" railroad in its annual survey of American companies, Fortune said. UP scored first among all railroads in the key areas of innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment, and global competitiveness.

UP President and CEO Jim Young responded in these words:

“Our goal is to operate a safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible railroad that delivers value for customers and shareholders. I am extremely proud of the tremendous focus, dedication, and effort by all our employees, especially in these challenging economic times.

“In order to meet the future transportation needs of our country, we will continue to invest in our railsystem and technology. Also, we will continue our work to enhance the many environmental benefits of freight rail."

Fortune is including Union Pacific in its list of 363 "World’s Most Admired Companies."
