Employment up year-over-year, past month

Figures released by the Surface Transportation Board show Class I railroads employed 162,766 people in mid-November, up 1.65% from November 2011, and up 0.20% from October 2012.

All categories save one gained year-over-year; Transportation (other than train and engine) fell 1.68% from a year ago, and also fell 0.59% from October.

Others slipping from October were Transportation (train and engine), down 0.37%, and Maintenance-of-Way and Structures, off 0.08%.

Gaining ground in November from October were Executives, officials, and staff assistants, up 0.18%, Professional and administrative, up 1.91%, and Maintenance of equipment and stores, up 1.17%.

Gaining ground from October 2011: Executives, officials, and staff assistants, up 4.67%; Professional and administrative, up 2.68%; Maintenance-of-Way and structures, up 2.20%; Maintenance of equipment and stores, up 1.47%; and Transportation (train and engine), up 1.12%.
