BNSF CEO Matt Rose will be joined by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and House Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-Iowa), and also Burlington, Iowa Mayor Jim Davidson, at a dedication ceremony at the Port of Burlington. The public is invited to attend the event.
The bridge was replaced in two parts during four years of construction, BNSF says. The first project replaced the swing span with a new vertical lift span that more than doubled the width of the navigation channel. The second project replaced the approach spans.
The original single-track railroad bridge was built in 1868 and upgraded in 1893. About 40 trains a day cross the Mississippi River on the bridge, including two Amtrak trains. The bridge opens about 300 times a month for river traffic.
