The lead locomotive of a BNSF freight consist was struck at least 15 times by gunfire from an automobile pacing the train last month in central Washington state, roughly midway between Seattle and Spokane.

BNSF is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible, spokesman Gus Melonas told Quincy, Wash.-based KOMO Newsradio.

"In my 38-year career, I don't recall a situation like this," BSNF spokesman Gus Melonas told KOMO Newsradio, which reported the incident Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013.

"All of a sudden they could hear rounds and feel rounds striking the side of the locomotive below the window of the operating cab of the lead locomotive," Melonas said. No one was hurt.
