August employment down from July

Class I railroad employment totaled 161,134 in August, down 0.54% from July, though maintaining an edge of 0.64% over August 2011, according to figures released Thursday by the Surface Transportation Board.

Transportation (train and engine) employment came to 65,129 in August, up 0.45% from July and 1.22% from August 2011.

Transportation ( other than train and engine) numbers added up to 6,675 , 2.78% lower than in July and 1.87% below August 2011.

The biggest year-over-year increase was in maintenance of way and structures where employees reached 37,352, up 2.08% from August 2011 and also up 0.64% from this July.

The biggest decline was the 8,757 reported for executives., officials, and staff assistants, down 9.99% from July and down 6.50% from August 2011.
