Douglas John Bowen is Managing Editor of RAILWAY AGE. He also served as Editor of Intermodal Age from 1989 to 1991, and has held various positions at Inbound Logistics magazine, High Speed Transport News, The Journal of Commerce, and CNN/Money. Bowen began his journalism career at the Asbury Park Press, a New Jersey daily newspaper. A graduate of Rutgers University, Bowen resides in Hoboken, N.J. He served as president of the New Jersey Association of Railroad Passengers (NJ-ARP) from 1987 to 2000 and again from 2004 to 2010, serving on the NJ-ARP board from 1984 until 2012; he remains a member of the statewide organization.

Wabtec to repower Metrolinx locomotives

Wabtec Corp. Tuesday said its MotivePower subsidiary has signed a $45 million contract with regional transportation authority Metrolinx to repower 11 locomotives with new engines and propulsion systems that meet significantly higher environmental standards. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2014, Wabtec said.

Norfolk Southern Monday said it has launched "a new television commercial that showcases the railroad's role as a creator of economic possibilities – a powerful force for growth among the industries and communities served by the line."

CN, Superior Silica Sands set pact

CN said Monday the Class I railroad and Superior Silica Sands have reached a multi-year agreement to move frac sand from a new processing plant now under construction in northern Wisconsin.

California's North County Transit District (San Diego County) Monday began construction of its pilot program "to install wayside horns in the city of Del Mar" with working taking place at the Coast Boulevard highway/rail grade crossing.

House Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) joined the National Railroad Construction and Maintenance Association (NRC), NRC member STX Railroad Construction, CSX, and Kia Motor Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) Aug. 9 for a briefing and tour of the KMMG plant and rail yard in West Point, Ga. , NRC says.

Regional Rail acquires Diamondback Signal

Kennett Square, Pa.-based Regional Rail, LLC said Friday it has acquired a majority ownership interest in Diamondback Signal, LLC. The latter specializes in the design, construction, and maintenance of signal installations for railroad/highway crossings, and was formed in January of this year.

The Pittsburgh-based Port Authority of Allegheny County (PAT) and its biggest union have reached a tentative contract agreement that could avert severe rail and bus transit service cutbacks scheduled for Sept. 2, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald announced Thursday.
