Superintendent of Vehicle Maintenance


Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) is a voter-approved passenger rail and bicycle-pedestrian pathway project located in Marin and Sonoma counties. It will serve a 70-mile corridor from Larkspur to Cloverdale, with a first phase from San Rafael to Santa Rosa. SMART will connect residents and visitors with jobs, education, recreation and services. Today, more than 75% of commuters in the North Bay travel either within or between the two counties to get to work. And the North Bay draws visitors from all over the world seeking a variety of recreation and leisure activities.

The Superintendent of Vehicle Maintenance is responsible for planning, directing, managing and overseeing the activities and operations of the Vehicle Maintenance Division, including maintenance control, vehicle performance monitoring, quality assurance, parts room inventory control, cleaning and servicing, fueling and warranty administration of revenue and non-revenue vehicles. This position will oversee the installation, maintenance and modification of the maintenance practices and support systems to ensure efficient, effective, safe and reliable service to the general public.  This position supervises the Vehicle Maintenance Division staff.  Together with the Manager of Operations, and Superintendents of Transportation and Maintenance-of-Way, this position forms part of the senior management of the SMART Operations Department.

Under direction of the Manager of Operations, this position is responsible for all activities of the Vehicle Maintenance Division including vehicle maintenance, stores, and support staff.  This is accomplished by establishing goals and performance objectives for equipment availability and reliability, keeping records and monitoring trends, establishing benchmarks, implementing modifications and improvements, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, local and SMART requirements, allocating available resources, establishing policies and procedures within SMART guidelines, directing actions of staff members, administering collective bargaining agreements, developing staffing, overseeing operating and budgetary plans, and managing budgets.
