RailwayAge

Beefing up the team

ith this issue, we welcome three heavy hitters to our business and editorial line-up: George Sokulski, Railway Age's new associate publisher, based in Chicago; and two new contributing editors, Larry Kaufman and Tom Sullivan.

Sokulski comes to Railway Age from Western-Cullen-Hayes, Inc., where he has been vice president of marketing. He has also held senior management positions with Racine Railroad Products, Inc., and Tamper, Inc. (now Fairmont-Tamper), as well as with Cahners Publishing Co. and Murphy-Richter Publishing Co.

"George's understanding of all facets of railroading, combined with his proven skills in sales staff training and the structuring of successful marketing and advertising campaigns, will be of great value both to our company and to our customers," said Simmons-Boardman Railway Group Publisher Robert P. DeMarco. Sokulski will also serve as associate publisher of our sister magazine, Railway Track & Structures.

Larry Kaufman, former transportation editor of Business Week and The Journal of Commerce, has been observing and participating in the railroad industry for 30 years. He has served as head of corporate communications for the Association of American Railroads, the Burlington Northern Railroad, and Southern Pacific Co. More recently, he has been a communication and public policy consultant for Norfolk Southern Corp., Canadian National Railway, and the AAR.

While new to our masthead, Tom Sullivan is not new to our readers. He is the author of an article on signaling and train control in Railway Age's 1999 C&S Buyer's Guide. He has been a key participant in the two international conferences on communications-based train control which Railway Age has sponsored in conjunction with PTG DeLeuw Cather, and he will have an important planner/participant role in the third conference, scheduled for May 11-12 in Washington, D.C. Now a consultant, Tom has worked for MTA New York City Transit as Director of New Technology Train Control and for San Francisco Muni as Chief Signal Engineer.

Our job is communicating. And in communicating there's nothing like the voice of experience, which is why we're particularly pleased to add George Sokulski, Larry Kaufman, and Tom Sullivan to our masthead.
